No matter where you are going to buy a Golden Retriever puppy from there are a few things to keep in mind when indicating a responsible breeder of Golden Retrievers. Surely, love and affection for this very breed cannot but make a breeder follow the AKC recommendations. It means that a responsible breeder would never breed dogs experiencing health problems or dogs with poor genetics. Before breeding, one is supposed to do all the necessary screens to the sire and the dam.
It is recommended to test the parent dogs for hip and elbow problems. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) can supply breeders with necessary information as to the procedure. Usually, screening is done at the age of two years old. The screening is performed every year. Breeders and owners of Golden Retrievers may also be interested in statistics concerning the rate of hip and elbow dysplasia in the breed. The OFA registers tested dogs by breed and is an acknowledged authority in diagnosing these diseases.
Note that Golden Retrievers suffer also from eye and heart problems. Therefore, breeders are advised to test their breeding stock for these health disorders. It is essential to buy puppies from the dogs with CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) certificates. They should also be SAS (Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis) clear.
Please, ask for the papers confirming that puppies have been vaccinated in due time. The first weeks of life can be the most important for puppies' further progress. It is important that a breeder looks properly after them supplying veterinary care, food and, surely, emotional interaction. Never buy a Golden on impulse. Take your time! Spend a few hours examining your future pet's living conditions and the way it plays with other puppies. It will help you to learn more about a puppy's personality and decide if it matches with your own character. A reputable breeder of Golden Retrievers will tell you about each puppy's habits.
