The GRCA is the major club for Golden Retrievers. The Golden Retriever Club of America operates in the ward of the AKC and follows its standard for the breed and regulations. All affiliated clubs and their members are expected to conform to these rules and breed Golden Retrievers in accordance with the standard.

The GRCA is the principal body in promoting the breed. It holds special events for purebred Golden Retrievers. Dogs that excel in shows and trials can earn such titles as the Show Dog Hall of Fame, Field Dog Hall of Fame, Obedience Dog Hall of Fame, and Versatility. The best sires and dams are also acknowledged by receiving the Outstanding Sire and Dam, respectively, titles.

The GRCA cares for the health of the breed. It is believed that the popularity of the breed is detrimental to its health in a way. The GRCA has established the GR Foundation. The foundation does research in the field on Golden Retriever health and promotes responsible breeding. It also educates the owners of Golden Retrievers on the basics of proper care for the breed.

People willing to donate the GR Foundation and help improve the breed, can contact the GRCA for details. Breeders and owners of Golden Retrievers are also welcomed to submit data concerning the health of their dogs.

Golden Retrievers - Golden Retrievers' origin is clear from careful records made during the process of breeding. It appeared in England in the middle of the 19th century due to deliberate crossing of a yellow wavy coated retriever and a Tweed water spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth aimed at breeding a dog that could be able to swim in cold water, have a keen sense of smell and retrieve game without damaging it. The AKC registered the Golden or Yellow Retriever in 1927. Since that time the Golden became known as a great sporting dog, guide dog and a pet. In 2001, it was the second most popular breed after the Labrador Retriever according to the AKC.

The Golden is a sporting dog bred and trained to retrieve game. Its water-resistant coat allows the dog to swim in very cold water. An athletic build presupposes a hard-working dog. Its straight legs are a little bit longer than a Labrador Retriever. It stands about 22-24 inches and weighs 60 to 75 pounds. The head is broad with a straight muzzle blending into the skull. Short ears almost touch the cheek, but should not be hound-like. A dark brownish eye color is preferable. A well set on tail, which is never to curve over the back, is covered with a long coat as well as the neck, thighs and back of the legs.

Golden Retrievers - Golden Retrievers are powerful, energetic dogs, and are loving and eager to please. Highly intelligent, the dog is easily trained and can serve as an ideal sportsman's dog, as a guide or service dog for handicapped, and they make excellent family pets. They are gentle and patient with children, although they can be rambunctious when young. Golden Retrievers are friendly with other dogs and other people. They do not make good guard dogs, as they rarely, if ever, attack. But, as a watchdog, they may bark loudly to signal a stranger's approach. Golden Retrievers are highly talented, some of their specialties are hunting, retrieving, narcotics detection, competitive obedience and they can even perform tricks. Also, they absolutely love to swim.

The Golden Retriever is a powerful and active dog that is alert and self-confident. These dogs give an overall appearance of balance and speed. The dog's body is well balanced. The chest is broad. The neck is long and muscular. The head is rather broad with a wide and with a powerful muzzle. The eyes are brown with dark rims. The pendant ears are medium-sized. The nose is black. The Golden Retriever's tail is long but never curved.

Golden Retrievers Breeders - Golden Retrievers are relatively new dogs, yet their history is very interesting especially to people who have chosen this breed as their companion or show dog. Lord Tweedmouth started to carry out breedings in 1864 and continued to perfect the breed later on in time. He strived to produce a good-looking dog that would be similar to the much-appreciated companion, a Tweed Water Spaniel. This breed is now extinct. Lord Tweedmouth bred his dog with the Irish Setter, the Black Coated retriever, and probably some other dogs.

The dogs bred by Lord Tweedmouth appeared to have good working qualities and made perfect pets. They possessed great stamina and were capable of spending long hours hunting with their owners. Besides, the new breed was playful and did well with other pets and children.

Golden Retrievers Breeders Puppies - Golden Retrievers are medium to large-sized dogs; males measuring from 23 to 24 inches at the shoulders and females are 21.5-22.5 inches. The average weight of males is 65-75 pounds; females weigh 55-65 pounds. Some individuals reach up to 26 inches at the shoulders and 105 pounds in weight. The average lifespan of this breed is 12-13 years. The breed standards are slightly different in the USA, England and Canada, so you should consult a breed club before showing your dog in other countries.

One of the main features of Golden Retrievers is their long dense coat, for which the breed got its name. The outer coat is coarse and resilient; it repels water and allows the dog to swim in the cold water. The coat may be either straight or wavy. Natural ruff around the neck, feathering on the chest, tail, underside and back of thighs is preferable. On the head, paws and front of the legs the hair is even and short.

Golden Retrievers Pictures - One of the most characteristic features of Golden Retrievers is the coat. It may be either straight, wavy or something in between. The outer coat is rather coarse and repels water; the undercoat is soft and dense. The coat is of medium length over most of the body, with longer feathering on the tail, the back of the legs and on the chest. The coat color ranges from a light gold to deep gold. The color should be rich and lustrous; lighter feathering is acceptable. Red colors, gray and white markings are unacceptable.

In Golden Retrievers over-all appearance, gait, balance and working abilities are given more emphasis than that of any other component. These dogs should be symmetrical, active, sound, powerful, not clumsy, nor too lean. Head should be broad and slightly arched. Stop should be well defined, but not too abrupt. Muzzle is straight in profile, deeper and wider at stop than at tip.
