Nowadays, these dogs are very popular as family companions and guides for the blind, but their original aim was fetching the game on land and in water. To perform such a difficult task, these dogs were selectively bred with a keen sense of smell, soft mouth, and water-repellent coat. Being very inquisitive and intelligent, these dogs lack aggression and cannot be used for guarding the house. They should be treated as equals and kept together with the family; otherwise, these dogs become bored, uninterested or destructive; they may try to escape or develop bad habits.
